During the weekend, the sámi village of Sirges carried out slaughter of the big reindeer bulls, sarvs on Guorbakt a couple of miles northwest of the municipality of Jokkmokk. The autumn slaughter of the reindeer bulls is one of the most important highligts of the reindeer husbandry year. Whole families gathered together and are engaged. The big heard with around 5000 animals are gathered in a big pasture. Small groups are selected to a smaller pasture from which the big bulls are caught with lasso.
The reindeer husbandry is the most important part of the local sustainable food culture and an unique part of the indigenous sámi culture. During the Jokkmokks marknad there will be many opportunities to experience the many products from the reindeer husbandry – from fantastic arts and craft to the incredibly tasty reindeer meet and the local food culture.
