We apologize to all non-Swedish speaking visitors that the application for this first year has not been developed for more languages. The Winter Market is on! Accompanied by jojk and ice-instrument music the Winter Market 2012 was declared officially open. Simon Marainen and Olof Tomas Utsi were awarded as front figure bearers of the Sami culture together with other local enthusiasts. Per Kuhmunen arrived with his reindeer pulling a sledge carrying the Opening Ceremony speech-holder Elisabeth Lax, Head of Culture, Norrbotten County Council, up onto the stage. The Winter Market fire was lit and the market open!

Per Erik Kuoljok tolled the reindeer bell as another symbol of the market now being opened, much to the joy of the audience which greeted back with a gloves-muted applause from within the warmth of the minus 20 degrees cold evening. Per Erik's speech, in which he acclaimed the Jokkmokk Winter Market, was held on both Sami, Swedish and English languages and rounded-off by his own atmospheric jojk session. Simon Marainen was awarded a scholarship, Proud Sami Culture, in the category of Music.

- I'm, happy, so it will be a happy jojk... I will jojk Nils Henrik Labba, says Marainen a breath before his voice rings out in the crisp cold air.

His determination and inventive resourcefulness, his courage and stamina to always endure, together with the hope that he will carry forward the Sami inheritance with its jojk, songs, poetry, theater and novel-writing, were part of the jury motivation in his electing. The jury consisted of the scholarship intitutioners Ridderheims and Falbygdens and Jokkmokks korv och rökeri.

Olof Tomas Utsi received a food-scholarship for his glowing interest of the Sami food inheritance. A glow each and every never wants to go out. For their great interest in and impact on the local music-scene Mikael and Sigrid Segerström were awarded together with Lena Lindberg and Valborg Mangs Märak.

The instruments made of ice came into their very own in the cold evening. The musicians mastered strings and drums as they had never before performed during any other circumstances. One more set is scheduled to Thursday at 5 PM and the same venue.

Spontaneous songs and jojk apperences

This years theme for the Jokkmokk Winter Market is music. This is evident in the program that is packed with exciting, beautiful and new musical experiences.
New this year is that spontaneous song and jojk will be performed just about everywhere in the market area.
It is the musician Nina Nordvall Vahlberg who along with others will make spontaneous jojk and songs at unexpected places in the market area.

The Jojk is the traditional sami way of singing and through that singing expressing the reindeer, people, nature and life.

Swedish soulking performs in Jokkmokk

The renowned soul-music artist Eric Gadd will appear guest of honour solo-artist at the traditional Market Concert, this year with Norrbotten Big Band. Norrbotten Big Band on tour performs together with with young and promising artists from BD-Pop. Two of these upcoming artists are Magnus Ekelund and Erik Zetterwall, both from Jokkmokk.

Two concerts are announced on Friday 3rd of February, both at the Folkets Hus venue.

In addition to the above, the regional musicians Jonatan Lundberg, Martina Lundberg and Linnea Bäcklund will also appear.

- It's going to be great fun blending these young artists together with an experienced and established soul artist. We are very proud to the fact that the Jokkmokk contribution amongst the young and upcoming artists continue to tour with Norrbotten Big Band after the market. It will be a grand opening night, says Anna-Karin Aira, Cultural Affairs officer at Jokkmokk Municipality.

Eric Gadd, who debuted 1987 with the full length album Hello and amongst others has been rewarded as Swedish Artist of the Year 1997 will thus provide us with sweet ear candy - do not miss this one out!

With instruments made of ice

Iceguitar, iceviolin, icedrums and icecello - Ice-music surely play on icecold instruments at the opening of the market on February 1. They give an extra concert Thursday, February 2 at 5 pm, on the snowstage in the centre of the marketarea.

With acoustic instruments made of clear ice the musicians lure music from out of frozen water. The Orchestra of Eternity is the name of the concert in which one half of the Eternity orcehestra offers a mix of klezmer, balkan, swing, tango and hump-bump along with musicians from Malmö that rounds off with classical and folk music.
A giant pan flute, icerolandophone, is used in a whole new way - delicate and luminous instruments is the melody!

Ethereal ice-instruments offer magical tones.

Buolla - change of venue

The family show 'Buolla', about the tame rein-deer has its final rehearsal at 12 o clock on Sunday 29th of January at Folkets Hus, the back door entrance. Everyone is most welcome to attend!

The sneak-preview, especially addressing children, is already fully booked and takes place on Monday the 30th of January.

All the shows throughout the week take place at the Folkets Hus venue, and include song, dance, music and play by Maxida Märak, Nina Vahlberg and Karolina Ericzon. Karolina acts the true story about Buolla, from the book by Anne Pavval. Everyone is especially welcome to attend the Friday and Saturday shows. Shows will start both days at 10 AM and 3 PM.

- It will be a different experience performing for an audience consisting only of children. They will for sure immediately express their true response, explains Maxida Märak who plays the lead character 'Nils Johan'.

Maxida has also designed and made the ensemble costumes, the music is composed by Nina Vahlberg and Karolina Ericzon.

Please note the change of venue from 'Hembygdsområdet' to 'Folkets Hus'.

Anne Pavval tells the story about the reindeerherder-boy Nils Johan and his best friends, the dog Jojo and the tame reindeer Buolla, on the Snow Stage Monday 30th of January at 3 PM and at Ájtte museum the same time on Friday 3rd of February. At the Snow Stage (in the Local History Area), a tame reindeer will actually appear and enter the stage, a symbolic Buolla to watch and pat as the real Buolla no longer is with us.
